GSA Per-Diem in Arlington, Explained: Why Your Lodging Cap Changes by Month

Arlington falls under the Washington, D.C. per-diem locality — which means your lodging ceiling moves with the season. Here's how to read it.

If you’re traveling on government per-diem — a federal employee, a defense contractor, or a travel nurse on a GSA-aligned contract — Arlington has a quirk worth understanding before you book a long stay: your lodging cap is not a single number. It changes by month.

Arlington is the D.C. locality

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) sets per-diem rates by location. Arlington County (along with Alexandria and Fairfax) is grouped into the Washington, D.C. metro locality, not rated as its own city. So the rate that applies to a stay in Crystal City or Pentagon City is the D.C. rate — and the D.C. rate is seasonal.

Why it moves

GSA adjusts lodging ceilings for high-demand months. In the D.C. locality the lodging cap rises in the spring and fall — when the city is busiest — and dips in the slower summer and deep-winter stretches. The meals & incidental expenses (M&IE) portion stays flat across the year; it’s the lodging line that moves.

The practical upshot: the exact same furnished home can sit comfortably under your cap in one month and brush against it in another, purely because of the calendar. For a multi-month assignment that spans a rate change, it’s worth knowing where the lines fall.

We keep the current fiscal-year figures — the month-by-month lodging caps and the M&IE rate — on a single page, updated to the live GSA table:

How direct-bill helps

Per-diem is a ceiling, not a budget you have to spend. Because we book direct — no platform fee inflating the nightly rate — a furnished home often lands under the lodging cap with room to spare, and the savings stay with the traveler or the agency. For longer assignments, a monthly rate is typically well below the nightly per-diem math.

If you’re placing per-diem travelers in Arlington and want the stay structured cleanly against the GSA caps, we can walk a relocation or staffing manager through it directly.
